FREE ARTICALS Natal Newspapers, December 17, 1994 Durban’s ‘white Zulu’ Moore might live in Umbilo, but his heart’s in Zululand. Brian Moore lives in the Durban suburb of Umbilo but he is more Zulu that anything else. For Brian Moore, life really took off when he became a member of the KwaNgcolosi tribe deep in the Umgeni Valley three years ago. He now spends most of his time training residents of the valley to develop building and business skills, and last year travelled 10 000 km meeting all the local chiefs.  Recently he came within a metre of meeting Princess Anne during the royals’ visit to the valley.  Dressed in traditional Zulu bheshu and skins, Moore accompanied his tribe’s Chief Bhengu, who was introduced to the princess. “If you aren’t introduced to Princess Anne she doesn’t speak to you but it was lovely to see her down in the valley” he said. Moore is regarded by Chief Bhengu as one of his indunas and the “white Zulu” can often be found at weddings and lobola celebrations in the valley.” The title of induna is more fun than anything else but my neighbours and friends call me the local chief of Umbilo,” he laughed. His Zulu name is “Bhungane “ which means cricket, given to him because he talks so much. Moore has been involved in the Umgeni Valley since 1980 and competed in many Dusi canoe marathons.  Canoeing charities have pumped more than R250 000 into the valley over the past few years through the Valley Assistance Fund, and several schools have been built. It was through canoeing that Moore became actively involved with the local community. The sport has taken me out to meet people and I love going into the valley. It’s like leading two lives and my Zulu has got to a point where I even think in the language. Moore has got together R2 500 of traditional dress but needs to spend another R3 000 to look really good. He believes city people need to get out and meet the rural people and interact. We are crossing the great divide here and it’s a real pleasure. Two years ago I got robbed and everyone asks why I keep going back into the valley, but there are really fantastic people down there. Something else which helps Moore to fit is the sizes of his stomach. “I have the biggest belly in the valley and the people down there accept it.  Here in town all everyone wants to know is when I’m starting running.”
