10 years on...

On the 27th of April 1994, I took an early morning walk and found a new R5.00 note lying on the sidewalk. An unusual surprise on an incredible day. The first fully democratic elections of the new South Africa was about to take place. The doom and gloom-sayers had all preached of power cuts and AWB raids on installations. The wary and confused had bought up supermarket stocks of canned foods and candles in anticipation of war.

And nothing happened. Another day dawned and what a day it was!

I remember how maButhelezi and her friend maMtshali, Fundani Ndlovu, my brother Pat, my mum and I had squeezed into my car and for a lack of space, my niece had sat in the boot. We all bubbled with excitement, and besides our boot passenger Jean, we were all old enough and eligible to vote. We hooted and shouted as we drove past the queues of people, at the local school, on our way to the university voting centre.

It was a moment to be remembered as we went through the booths, pushed our fingers into the "invisible" dye and voted for our chosen parties. Afterwards we drove around the neighbourhood observing the patient and diverse people in the queues and being observed in return.

In just over 4 months we will begin the process again. 10 years will have passed since all South Africans became free to vote, free to fully participate and free to stand proudly on the world stage.

It has been an incredible roller coaster ride since then! Nelson Mandela and his fellow politicians have created strong foundations for a land of peace and reconciliation. Our country has moved from pariah status to a respected nation of peacemakers. Our people are making their mark in many countries around the world. We have hosted and won the Rugby world cup. We have hosted the Cricket world cup and recently the Swimming world championships. Our economy has grown and our currency is strong. We have one of the best democratic constitutions in the world. We are respected. We can travel to most countries in the world.

We have challenges, as does any country in the world. Our challenges are often particularly South African, in some cases and in other cases are common to the rest of the world. We have work to do and personally I am excited to be part of the process.

April 27 2004 is another staging post in the growth of one of the most spiritually influential and politically inspirational nations in the world. MaButhelezi is only with us in spirit now and I will respect her new freedom by voting again. And when I do I will load up her daughter maKhumalo, her grandchild maShandu, my mum and my wife Arthie, as we pack ourselves into the red Maxima, to record our individual, separate and yet somehow united votes.

A great future lies ahead for South Africa and South Africans. We are tough, caring and giving. Strong, open and innovative. Adventurous, exciting and patriotic. We have the powerful ability to forgive, unite and to build. And we are ready for another decade of growth, unity, respect and understanding.

Viva South Africa, Viva!
